Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales Aled Roberts is calling on the Welsh Government to endorse the Epilepsy Deaths Register in Wales.
Speaking after hosting a Senedd event for Epilepsy Aware Wales on Tuesday, Aled Roberts said:
“It was a pleasure and a privilege to host the event and to meet individuals and families who are dealing with epilepsy on a day-to-day basis.
“It is important that we help raise awareness of this condition, which affects 1 in 94 people in Wales, one-tenth of whom are under the age of 18.
“There are more than 40 types of epilepsy, which makes diagnosis and treatment extremely difficult and although it is clear that there is a lot of good work already being done by support organisations in Wales, there is still much more we can all do to improve matters.
“Sadly, in the UK there are over a thousand deaths a year with epilepsy-related causes but many of these deaths are potentially avoidable. The Epilepsy Deaths Register collates information on reported deaths of people with epilepsy and this improves and informs research, treatment and awareness. It has been endorsed by the UK Government and I have today tabled a Statement of Opinion calling on the Welsh Government to do the same.
